Why did Dwayne Haskins run onto the field to talk to Taylor Heinicke?

Why was Dwayne Haskins on the field late in the game?

Here’s the situation: With 3:55 to play in the 4th quarter and Washington down 20-6, Taylor Heinicke had the offense deep in Carolina territory and facing a fourth-and-8 from the Panthers' 12 yard line.

Heinicke took the snap, held the ball, rolled to his right before finding Logan Thomas for a touchdown. However, he was only able to avoid the rush because Wes Schweitzer was holding and the touchdown was taken off the board. On the play, a Carolina defender was shaken up and needed assistance from the trainers.

During the timeout, things got interesting as suddenly Haskins, who was benched earlier in the quarter and whose days in Washington may be numbered, was running onto the field with his helmet on. But he wasn't there to play.

What was he doing there? Why was he on the field to talk to Heinicke, who despite having less in-game NFL experience, is four years older than Haskins?

It appears Haskins followed Chase Young onto the field. Young explained he went onto the field to offer words of encouragement to Heinicke but didn’t remember what he said on the field.

But… why are they running on the field?

The second fourth-down play after the holding and pep talk from Haskins and Young was an incompletion and a turnover on downs.

On his final drive, Heinicke did put together a 91-yard, eight-play scoring drive to cut the lead to 20-13. Maybe the talk had a delayed effect.
