Are You Planning to Race in Formula One?

If not, McLaren's 720S series just might be the most serious vehicle that you'll ever experience.

Let's just start with the McLaren's Super-Model looks.

We've all looked at some vehicles and thought "Huh…seriously??"…right?

You'll never ask that question when looking at a McLaren.   While it absolutely exudes sexiness, that's not the point.  Instead, you quickly get that every curve…every scoop and intake…everything on the vehicle is designed to help you accelerate, handle, and brake at 200…yes…200 MPH.   Well…212 MPH actually…but just a tad over 200 with the top down.

That's not to say that McLaren's720S isn't luxurious.  Sure it is.   But more than anything, it's SERIOUS.

This is no toy.   710 HP from a 4.0 liter V8 connected to the road via Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires that would probably look good on a steamroller…and running through a 7-speed dual-clutch "automatic" transmission.   Think scalpel…not butter knife.

Rapid transit for two with room for either a couple cases of wine…or overnight bags…plus a secret compartment for a extra large pizza in the rear.   And one honkin' engine right behind you to keep that pizza warm.

How much?   $299 for the coupe and another $16,000 for the Spider drop top.

But for most, that's just where the bidding starts.   We had a Porsche Boxter's worth of options that brought our window sticker to $386,930.   In addition to the expected special paint, interior, carbon fiber, exhaust et al, our 720S Spider had an interesting $9,100 option…an electrochromic sunroof that instantly changes from sun-blocking opaque to a bright light tint with the press of a button.   Quite cool.

As for the extra $4,420 12-speaker audio, save your money and just listen to those 710 HP growl.   And speaking of the engine, "Hands Off!"   Don't even bother trying to lift the engine cover.   It's strictly dealer-only.   And for just under 400K, you probably want to keep that way.

What's missing?   A heads-up display.   For a vehicle that can hit triple digits just entering a freeway, I'd like to have every possible reminder of how fast I'm going at all times.

Depending upon exactly how you achieved your 15+ minutes of fame, you might already have a McLaren 720S in your 6-car garage…but for those of us who have yet to experience those special minutes, and for those of us who love cars…I'm suggesting that you consider renting one of these.   Really.

If you don't, you may never know what's it's like to see heads swivel in your direction…to experience Z06 Corvettes sulking off to the side…not even bothering to challenge you…to even get air fist bumps from mamas pushing their strollers as you gently motor by.

There are some truly noble members of the exotic 200 MPH club out there today, but right now it's McLaren who seems to be President of that club.

Whether buying…renting for a day…or better yet, doing a little track time…if you truly enjoy and appreciate performance, I doubt you'll ever regret the time you spent behind the wheel of a McLaren….especially under the open roof of a  720S Spider McLaren.
