Someone much smarter than I once said something like "Not everyone needs a truck every day, but almost everyone will need a truck someday."
And boy did that day come for me…and boy did Chevy's Silverado deliver!
So what was it that really made the Silverado shine?
That marvelous Multiflex tailgate…perhaps the best $445 that you'll ever spend.
GMC pioneered the Multiflex last year and it proved so popular that Chevy got it only a year later.
Scroll down to the pictures and just imagine being waaay closer to100 years of age than you may care to admit…and trying to load all of that through a conventional tailgate. No thanks.
But Chevy's Multiflex tailgate made stepping up into the bed with a couple of awkward 80 pound items almost a breeze. Almost.
Now when it comes to Silverados, Chevy's got more ways to configure a truck than Baskin Robbins has flavors. Old-School single-cab work-truck…a family-friendly four-door Double Cab, or spacious four-door crew cab.
Bed lengths range from 69.9" to 79.4" to 98.1"…and the levels of trim seem endless. And the good news is that the Silverado's Multiflex tailgate can be ordered with any of Chevy's trim packages or bed lengths. And there's even more room inside the cab with hidden storage in the rear seatbacks…and flip-up rear seating that allows for some pretty significant in-vehicle safe and dry storage.
Engines? Choose from a 2.7 liter Turbo four, a 4.3 six, a 5.3 V-8, a big 6.2 liter V-8…even a3.0 liter Duramax Turbo Diesel.
We had the Big Guy in our test RST Crew Cab. 6.2 liters, 420 Horses and 460 ft lbs of torque…and a ten-speed auto. Muscle enough to tow over 13,000 lbs.
And thanks to Chevy's cylinder de-activation technology, this set up got me right at 21 MPG on the road…but still had "Instant On" passing power. The cylinder de-activation automatically shuts down whatever cylinders are not needed at the moment. In fact, Chevy claims that you'll be running on less than all eight cylinders over half the time.
Once inside, your passengers will enjoy almost limo-like room and comfort.
For a hair less than 60 thousand, we enjoyed heated leather seating and steering, virtually all of today's safety features…including GM's Teen Driver mode, Bose premium audio, voice recognition, front and rear parking assist…and then all those truck-only features like bedliner, 12 tie-down points in the bed, special LED bed lighting, a trailering package with hitch guidance…all topped off with Silverado's special gloss black 20" alloys and their traffic-stopping red and black Redline Package.
Again…for around 60 thousand, the combination of capability and comfort that Chevy's Silverado Crew Cab RST 4-wheel drive offers is pretty hard to beat…which is exactly why vehicles like this are becoming today's favorite family-haulers.
