In today's polarized society, are there still a few things upon which we all can agree?
How about fun? Smiles? Happy surprises?
Need more of these? Then slide into the drivers' seat of a Mini…any Mini.
We had the good fortune of testing a Mini Cooper S 2 Door for a week…and pretty much just smiled the whole time.
The 2-Door is Mini's baby of the bunch…and those smiles will start as soon as you slip behind the wheel.
Mini's now classic big round info center and their ignition switches are the first to greet you as you ease into soft quilted Nappa leather seats and reach for the big, soft heated Nappa leather covered steering wheel.
But that smile goes from amused to ear-to-ear once you flip that ignition switch, snick it into gear and take your first curve.
Whoa! All that you may have heard about Minis having go cart reflexes are true. Wherever you are headed, you'll start looking for the curvy, twisty way to get there. This car is just flat fun to drive. If you have a significant other, they'll probably get tired of hearing "Honey…can I run out and get you anything"?"
And while Mini makes a truly engaging automatic, the standard 6-speed stick shift just adds to the overall connection you'll feel with the vehicle. The Mini has perhaps the smoothest shifting manual transmission that I can remember.
While the Mini hasn't lost its quirky shape, look hard and you'll notice several changes for '22. The front and rear have been refreshed with styling tweaks, and the interior sports new touches throughout… including ambient lighting, a 8.6" screen and a steering wheel that…well…it's just hard to take your hands off that wheel.
This Mini 2-door is almost a two-seater, but if your driver and co-pilot are both around 5' tall, there may be room for two more in the back.
But as a two-seater, space is abundant…and there's room with the seats flipped down for a good week or two on the road for a twosome.
Minis start in the low $20's with a pretty responsive 1.5 liter turbo three-cylinder that pumps out 136 HP and will get you to 50 in 7.6 seconds…altho' it feels much faster than that.
The "S" will start in the mid to high $20's and will get you a 2.0 trubo four cylinder with 192 horses and a 0-60 time of under six and a half seconds. But with the Mini's small size and low height, you'll feel like you're pushing 100 MPH when you hit that 60.
So…with all this praise, is there a downside to the Mini S 2 Door?
Well…maybe just one.
Due to its go cart+ size, your Mini can be a little tough to find in a crowded parking lot!
