Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was forced out of the team’s 30–27 overtime loss to the Panthers in the third quarter with a knee injury, and early indications are that the setback could cost him the remainder of the season.
While the full severity is still unknown — Penix and the team are seeking a second opinion — there is concern, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that he may not return this year. It would mark the third season-ending knee surgery for Penix, dating back to his time at Indiana University. In his absence, the Falcons will turn to Kirk Cousins, who has already made one start this season while Penix dealt with a bone bruise in the same knee.
To make matters worse, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, wide receiver Drake London will be sidelined for at least a week with a PCL sprain.
