Earlier today The Morning Shift reacted to the Atlanta Falcons acquiring safety Sydney Brown in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday in a deal that also included a swap of fourth and sixth-round draft picks that will have the Falcons sending the No. 114 and No. 197 picks to the Eagles in exchange for Brown, the No. 122 pick and the No. 215 pick, and The Morning Shift crew explained why they think Brown can compete to be the Falcons starting nickel corner until Billy Bowman returns from his achilles injury.
“This will now be one of the top five story lines that I’ll watch in training camp personally right now as it sits. I want to see what their plan is because I do think that there is a Billy Bowman component, talked about it a little bit earlier, where Sydney Brown can be a box player.” Mike Johnson said
Mike finished his thought by saying “Maybe this is a direct answer to some of the struggles you had down the stretch last year of stopping the run. When you did go to sub package of having a Dee Alford or whoever it may be having to play one of these box presences or you know having Ronnie Harrison kind of inserted in there. That position that you can roll down and back out and play in coverage that’s gonna be coveted and I think that this is a direct response to some of the things that Jeff Ulbrich feels like they needed down the stretch last year.”
After struggling with depth last season new Falcons General Manager Ian Cunningham said last week that one of the goals of this offseason has been to elevate the team's "floor”, and it seems like Cunningham, Falcons President of Football Matt Ryan, and the rest of Atlanta’s front office are continuing to do just that with this trade.
