Braves could rethink long-term plans for Ronald Acuna Jr. with latest injury

The Atlanta Braves and All-Star outfielder have once again found themselves in a familiar place as the 2023 National League Most Valuable Player has been sidelined with a strained hamstring, suffered in the Braves 6-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Following an MRI on Wednesday, the organization announced the Acuna Jr. would be placed on the 10-day injured list, marking the second time this season he will miss time due to injury.

“The reality is, and it’s not even about this year, [Ronald] Acuna Jr. will be back, he’ll be fine and he’ll help us hopefully win a World Series, but when you start talking about the long term viability of Ronald Acuna [Jr.], and what this means down the road, this is why I don’t believe the Braves will pay him,” 92-9 The Game’s Carl Dukes said as he explained to cohost, Mike Bell, why he believes Acuna Jr.’s injury history may prevent him from earning a high new deal from Atlanta.

“An I hate it because he’s homegrown, he’s in your organization, he wins an MVP, he’s done a lot of great things, but these soft tissue injuries keep popping up,” Dukes said as of Acuna Jr. who suffered a torn right ACL in 2021, missed time in 2022 with and quad strain and foot injury, and suffered a left torn ACL in 2024. “I’m not telling you that he’s not going to be a great player for the next 10 to 15 years, but I also think the Braves and the way that they operate, they look at this and go look, ‘maybe we got the best years of Ronald Acuna [Jr.],’” Dukes said.
