CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago Public High School teacher said the end-of-the-year gift he received from his students had him in tears.

Mather High School Senior English Teacher Aneesh Shukla said he mentioned to his students in passing weeks ago that he’s colorblind. They asked a few questions and it seemed to have been forgotten.

But on Monday, the last day for seniors, he said they had pooled their money and got him a pair of glasses that can give new perspective to those who are colorblind, otherwise known as Enchroma glasses.

“They all pitched in and bought me these expensive glasses and it was unbelievable,” Shukla said.

The students took him outside.

“It was amazing. I was seeing things that I hadn’t seen ever before and it was really, really incredible," he said.

Shukla said he started crying.

“Yeah, I did, it was really pretty embarrassing, I was openly weeping in front of my students," because of what he could see, he said, and because of their generosity.

He said it certainly makes up for those days when the job can be less than rewarding.
