(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A landmark South Loop church is seeing the fruits of restoration work on its more than 100-year-old “Tree of Life” mural.
It took 10 weeks as part of a $500,000 restoration job at the 2nd Presbyterian Church on 19th and Michigan.
Peter Schoenmann, co-director of Parma Conservation, says there was practically amber on the 1,200-square-foot mural -- not to mention a century of dirt.
“What we also discovered was that it had been restored in the 1950s,” he said. “Some well-meaning person came in to spruce up the mural and, what they did essentially is repainted a lot of it. So, we had to take that paint off to expose the original.”
Schoenmann says the mural has its original vibrant colors back.
Parma Conservation put preservation varnish over the mural to protect it.
