CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Cook County jury awarded nearly $80 million to a Chicago family in a lawsuit over the death of a 10-year-old girl who was killed in a crash during a high-speed police pursuit four years ago.

The City admitted fault in the death of Da’Karia Spicer, eventually, and sought damages of $12 to $15 million. The family sought $140 million.

The jury awarded $79.85 million.

The city’s insurers, according to the family’s attorneys, would only agree to a $12 million dollar settlement.

“Why was the Spicer family put through this?” attorney Lance Northcutt asked. “Why did we have to go to the extent of having a Cook County jury listen to this excruciating evidence? Those insurance companies decided to put profit over humanity.”

The girl was in a car with her father and brother in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood when a car being pursued by police was reported to be going about 90 miles per hour when it slammed into their car.
