CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An organization looking to improve the quality of life on Chicago’s West Side has won what’s known as “The Chicago Prize,” a $10 million dollar grant from the Pritzker Traubert Foundation.

The Garfield Park Rite to Wellness Collaborative won the grant after presenting a plan it calls Sankofa Wellness Village, which is a

$50 million dollar plan to create a walkable village in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

It includes a business incubator, healthcare, wellness and fitness centers, childcare, banking and a grocery store, as well as arts and entertainment.

“In choosing this remarkable project, we were struck by the enormous disparity between life expectancies in West Garfield Park compared to other parts of our city," said Bryan Traubert, co-founder of the Pritzker Traubert Foundation.

“This strong grass roots community-led proposal inspired us with their bold vision to address those disparities by bringing needed and essential services that are frankly taken for granted in many other parts of the city.”
