(670 The Score) It didn’t take long for right-hander Jake Arrieta to find a new job after the Cubs released him.
Arrieta has agreed to a deal to join the Padres, according to multiple reports Monday. The news comes after the Cubs cut the 35-year-old Arrieta last Thursday amid prolonged struggles. Arrieta was 5-11 with a 6.88 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 20 starts for the Cubs in 2021 and had an 8.35 ERA in 14 starts since May 1.
San Diego was in need of another starting pitcher after ace Yu Darvish – who was traded from the Cubs to the Padres last December – landed on the injured list with a back issue. Arrieta is expected to start for the Padres on Wednesday.
San Diego currently holds the second National League wild-card spot, leading Cincinnati by 2.5 games.
