NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WBEN) - One person remains unaccounted for after an overnight house fire on Walnut Avenue in Niagara Falls.

Officials told WBEN the fire started at 3:35 a.m. in a multi-family home at the corner of Walnut and 20th street. The fire then spread to the next home over.

"There was a tremendous amount of fire when the first units rolled up," Battalion Chief David McGovern said. "I don't know how it got to be burning that bad. This is Walnut Avenue. It's a (high-traffic) area. How the fire got that bad that quick is beyond me."

One neighbor told WBEN that the homes were drug houses. McGovern could not confirm that.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

McGovern said the two homes are now scheduled for an emergency demolition.
