NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. (WBEN) – Another four people have died in Niagara County in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 42.

Niagara County officials said that three women, ages 61, 64, and 95 and a 51-year-old man have died from coronavirus. All four of them had an underlying health condition.

There have been 16 deaths reported this week by the Niagara County Department of Health.

The four were among the 640 total positive cases in the county. There are 21 new cases of the virus that were reported. Among the 287 active cases, 21 people are currently in the hospital.

There are 311 people who have recovered.

A recent spike in cases is the result of an outbreak at Newfane Rehabilitation and Health Care Center that has resulted in the deaths of multiple senior citizens.

"Niagara County has been working with them to provide PPE and testing kits," Legislator John Syracuse said in a statement. "I believe all residents have now been testing. But ultimate regulatory authority rests with New York State."

State officials plan to visit the nursing home early next week, according to Niagara County Chairwoman Rebecca Wydysh.
