Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - Expansion of the Metro Rail through Tonawanda and Amherst to the University at Buffalo's South Campus potentially took another step forward this week.
A Draft Environmental Impact Statement was released by the NFTA outlining the potential social, economic, and environmental effects that may result from the proposed expansion.
"It's certainly a major milestone," said Jeffery Amplement, NFTA Planning Project Manager.
The release kicks off a 45-day public comment period that will include a public hearing held on Aug. 19 from 6 p.m.-to-8 p.m. at Sweet Home Middle School.
"We've made it a point to look at strategies to maintain access during construction and minimize disturbances."
Amplement said the project would likely cost $2 billion, but it is still many years out.
"We still have several years of design to complete. When we get to the construction period that's another four year period, so we still have some time to influence how this project works, how it meets the needs of the community, and how it meets the needs of our riders," Amplement said.
