Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A Cheektowaga police officer fatally shot a man wielding a knife Wednesday afternoon in an apartment complex near Sanders Road and Colvin Avenue in North Buffalo, Cheektowaga Police Chief Brian Coons said at a news conference.

Officers went to the residence shortly before 12:30 p.m. to make a summary arrest of the man, who was a suspect in an earlier assault on a hotel employee in Cheektowaga on Monday. The victim was hospitalized, and remains unconscious, according to Coons.

When officers arrived, they say the man attacked them with a large knife, resulting in one officer firing their weapon.

Police called for an ambulance and attempted life-saving measures on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A knife was recovered, officials said.

All four Cheektowaga police officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy.

Buffalo Police and Buffalo Fire also responded to the scene.

Body camera footage has been turned over as part of the investigation. The Buffalo Police Department and the New York State Attorney General’s Office are conducting the investigation.

Authorities are working to notify the man’s next of kin. No further details have been released at this time.
