Garbage truck operator pleads guilty for injuring teen pedestrian last October

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A garbage truck driver has pleaded guilty to assault and reckless driving charges after striking and injuring a teen pedestrian in the City of Buffalo last October.

47-year-old Sasiya Davis-Johnson of Buffalo pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court on Wednesday to the two misdemeanor charges after being offered a reduced plea with the consent of the victim.

It was back on Oct. 2, 2024 at approximately 8:16 a.m. when David-Johnson was operating a garbage truck while working for the City of Buffalo Department of Public Works near the intersection of Rhode Island Street and 14th Street.

Davis-Johnson recklessly drove the garbage truck by placing the vehicle in reverse and moving in the wrong direction on Rhode Island Street, a one-way street. The 17-year-old male pedestrian was subsequently hit by the truck while crossing Rhode Island Street.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where he underwent several surgeries for serious physical injuries, including an amputation of his left leg. He remains hospitalized in a long-term care facility.

Davis-Johnson faces a maximum of 364 days in jail when she is sentenced on Dec. 18 at 10 a.m.

She remains released under supervision
