Inmate charged with attempted escape

Deputies say he tried to escape during medical check

Matthew Buck

Lockport, NY (WBEN) A Niagara County Jail inmate is charged with attempting to escape from the jail. Deputies say a nurse was conducting a medical check at the time.

Niagara County Sheriff's Deputies say 41-year old Matthew W. Buck of Niagara Falls brandished a man-made shank and held it to a civilian nurse's throat in an attempt to use her as a hostage to escape the facility.

Deputies say the nurse was conducting a medical check of Buck at which point she was overtaken by him. They add quick action by the corrections staff enabled them to disarm Buck and safely remove the civilian nurse without injury.

Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti stated "If it were not for the immediate actions of our Corrections Division, this outcome could have ended differently. They are to be commended for their attention to duty and overall safety and security of the facility".

Buck was charged with Attempted Escape in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third degree, Menacing in the Second Degree, and Harassment in the Second Degree. Buck was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court where bail was set at $20,000 cash.

Buck had been in the jail on a parole violation.
