Buffalo, NY (WBEN) If that gift you received Monday for Christmas didn't turn out just right, your first thought is to return it. The Better Business Bureau says be aware of store policies on returns.
Kat Schmeider of the Better Business Bureau says stores are not legally obligated to accept any return that's not misrepresented or damaged. "While most retailers do offer refund and exchange programs, policies vary greatly from store to store," says Schmeider.
Schmeider says most stores do require gift receipts for returns to be accepted. "You may end up having to contact the person who gave you the gift in order to get the receipt, if you don't have it," notes Schmeider. "I know a lot of stores, are requiring you to bring an ID as well."
Schmeider says, if you can, make a return to a brick and mortar location instead of shipping to an online retailer. "If it's an online purchase, there may be a fee associated with making a return, so it's always good to check to see if you can return the item to a brick and mortar location," recommends Schmeider.
