Woman pleads guilty to animal cruelty charges following December welfare check

Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - 24-year-old Kerisa Schmitt, formerly of Cheektowaga, has pled guilty to animal cruelty charges stemming from an animal welfare check at her home in December last year.

Officers from the SPCA Serving Erie County conducted an animal welfare check at Schmitt's Colton Street residence on Dec. 14, finding 156 farm and domestic animals housed in a small, unsanitary garage.

Among those animals were 117 chickens, 18 ducks and geese, 15 rabbits, two goats and a cat and pig.

Schmitt pled guilty to 10 counts of Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals; Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance.

Schmitt, who now lives in West Virginia, received a one-year conditional discharge and has been ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.
