Vice President Kamala Harris appears to be gaining ground on former President Donald Trump when it comes to major issues like the economy, according to recent polls.
The latest findings come from a Marist Poll, which found that Harris trails Trump by 3% among American adults when it comes to who they think would be better at handling the economy.
The new results show a major change from how voters viewed the previous matchup between President Joe Biden and Trump when the current president trailed his predecessor by 9% in the same poll run in June.
The economy has been ranked a top issue by voters in numerous polls, even with the Federal Reserve cutting its key interest rates in September and inflation easing.
Another poll, run by Fox News, showed the shrinking margin between Trump and Harris/Biden, as Biden trailed Trump by 15% in a March survey, while Harris trailed Trump by 5% in how voters think they will handle the economy.
While there doesn’t appear to be one main factor in the changing tide, Pollster Nate Silver wrote last Friday that recent economic activity could be helping Harris, who is currently in office.
“That helps Harris, too,” Silver wrote.
Other impacts could be political messaging, as Harris and Trump have ramped up their campaigns and ads to full steam.
Harris has continued to push that Trump is not looking to help the middle class, as she has run several ads claiming he will only offer tax cuts to the country’s richest.
Meanwhile, Trump has pushed that Harris’ plans for the economy are dangerous for the country. He has also said that she bears responsibility for the current economic issues and those that have plagued the country for the last four years.
“If you think four years of Harris-Biden is bad, that’s nothing compared to four years of Harris-Walz,” the Trump campaign has argued.
