Amazon said in a post an hour after the outage began that it had identified the root cause and was “actively working towards recovery.” It did not disclose more about the cause.

Amazon provides cloud computing services to many governments, schools and companies.

The outage also affected Amazon’s ability to provide updates, it said. The issues appear to be centered on the service's east coast base.

“AWS is the biggest cloud provider and us-east-1 is their biggest data center, so any disruption there has big impacts to many popular websites and other internet services,” said Doug Madory, director of internet analysis at Kentik Inc.

Madory told AP that he didn’t think the outage was due to anything nefarious. Kentik saw a 26% drop in Netflix traffic, while some airlines like Delta and Southwest were affected.

People trying to use Instacart, Venmo, Kindle, Ring, Tinder, Roku, and Disney+ have reported issues. The McDonald’s app is also down.

New York City subway online service updates were also hit by the outage, with the MTA asking commuters to use their social media accounts for information, and to listen close to announcements at stations.

Some online games like “Valorant” and “League of Legends” faced issues as well, according to Insider.
