Two female hikers who were visiting Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park were found dead on Saturday afternoon, according to local authorities.

The women were seen entering the park by several hikers on Saturday morning. But after the pair did not return throughout the day, many became worried and contacted the police, the Nevada State Police said in a statement released Sunday.

Police arrived at the park to conduct a welfare check on the women at around 2:48 p.m., the statement shared.

It was then the officers found the body of one of the women on a trail inside the park.

The statement said that officers then reached out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s search and rescue team for assistance in locating the other missing woman. Together they found her body in a canyon at the park.

An investigation into the death of the women is ongoing, as police have not provided a cause of death for either of the hikers at this moment.

Where the park is located, in Overton, Nevada, temperatures hit a high of 114 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, which put an excessive heat warning in place for most of the state over the weekend.
