Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Time is running out for people to be able to share their opinion on New York State's energy plan before it is finalized at the end of the year.
The energy plan is the state's broad policy direction that guides energy-related decision making. It is the document that paves the way for things like the state's ban on gas hookups to new construction that begins in January.
"The objective of the energy plan is to move toward 70% of electricity generated by renewables by 2030," said Dominic Cortese of Cortese Construction.
Cortese told WBEN that getting the word out about state policy on natural gas and other forms of energy has been a struggle.
"The New York State Builders Association conducted a survey across New York State and the remarkable consensus, like 95% of people, had no idea that as of Jan. 1, 2026 if you go to build a house it has to be electric," he said.
Earlier this year, NYSEG proposed a 24% increase to residential electricity delivery rates to the New York Public Service Commission. National Grid Customers saw a three-year rate hike plan begin on their bills for September.
People have until Oct. 6 to submit a written comment on the plan. You can do so HERE.
