Lockport, N.Y. (WBEN) - A fast moving and powerful rain burst left parts of Niagara County underwater late Tuesday and led to a travel ban and state of emergency being declared in much of the region.
The hardest hit community appears to be Lockport where streets were flooded and vehicles were stranded along Transit Road in standing water.
Meteorologist Jim Mitchell at the National Weather Service in Buffalo tells WBEN the storms focused over isolated areas, leading to the flooding. "There was really nothing to move them, they just kind of trained over the same areas."
Following Saturday's day-long impressive rainfall across much of Western New York, parts of Niagara County were again seeing rain measured by the inch, says Mitchell. "We've seen anywhere from 2 to 4 inches on average."
In addition to the rain, there was impressive hail with ping pong size hail reported in the Lockport area as well.
While the travel ban in Niagara County has been lifted, a state of emergency remains in the county for clean-up efforts.
"There is some dry weather ahead," says Mitchell as he notes a much-improved forecast for the remainder of the week.
