1 Dead After Fire Rages Through Coram Apartment Complex

CORAM, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- One person is dead after an early morning fire raged through an apartment complex on Long Island.

The blaze broke out around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday at the Fairfield Courtyard apartment complex on Country Club Drive in Coram.

WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reports a 71-year-old woman who lived alone in a ground floor apartment managed to escape, but once she got outside, the portico of the building collapsed on top of her. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Ten others escaped the fire. One other person, who has medical issues, was transported to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

Officials said inside the victim's apartment was an oxygen tank which could have fueled the flames, Hall reported.

Fire marshal also looking into whether there were working smoke detectors inside the apartments.

Suffolk County Police Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer says the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

This was the fourth apartment complex fire in Suffolk County in the past two week.
