NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- The city is putting more women on pedestals.
Four new female statues were announced this week following a year long campaign to fix a centuries-old gender imbalance.
The city's First Lady Chirlaine McCray marked the first week of Women's History Month by announcing four new honoreees at the Brooklyn Museum. The first: jazz singer Billie Holliday. Her statue will be in her home borough of Queens. The other honorees are civil rights pioneer Elizabeth Jennings Graham, public health pioneer Dr. Helen Rodríguez Trías of the Bronx, and Staten Island lightkeeper Catherine Walker.
"But one monument in each borough is that enough? No! It's just the beginning. We have a long way to go to correct the glaring gender imbalance in our public spaces," McCray said.
Last November the group She Built NYC announced a monument for the first black Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in Brooklyn. The city is looking for female artists to do the work.
