NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A 30-year-old man has been killed in the city's 18th biking fatality this year.

The crash happened on Third Avenue near 36th Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn around 9 a.m. Monday.

Police said the man was hit and killed by a tractor trailer after swerving into traffic to avoid an opening car door.

There are no bike lanes where the crash occurred and people in the neighborhood said the traffic that flows through the area is more in line with what you'd see on a highway.

"This area is so congested with so much commercial traffic," said Al, who works around the corner from the crash scene. "And they don't stop, the light can turn red and they just keep going."

Police don't expect to file any charges and the investigation is ongoing.

The deadly crash comes days after Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a $58 million plan to improve the city's bicycle infrastructure and make the streets safer for cyclists.

The plan includes tripling the number of protected bike lanes installed every year, redesigning intersections and hiring 80 new transportation workers to focus solely on biking improvements.

There have been 18 biking fatalities so far in 2019 — eight more than all of 2018.
