NORTHPORT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A Long Island man became a hero this month to a deer that was stuck in a soccer net.
Todd Brush was no stranger to helping animals and tells WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall he’s rescued a swan, a mole, squirrels and even a bat in the past.
So, when he saw a deer stuck in a soccer net on the grounds of Harbor Country Day School in St. James, he got out a knife and began cutting.
“I was trying to cut, my hands were shaking because I was afraid that he was going to bring his head up and get stabbed by the knife,” Brush explained.
He worked for about 12 minutes to get the animal free and videotaped the entire rescue from start to finish.
“When I play back the video, I couldn't believe how long it was. I was like, it felt like it took a minute,” he said.
Brush notes that he contacted the school’s superintendent and offered to pay to replace the net but his request was denied after the school saw the video showing the distressed animal.
