NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — One of the FBI’s top ten most wanted, a Newark man accused of murdering his girlfriend, has been captured.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Gregory Ehrie made the announcement Thursday, saying a message was sent to Lamont Stephenson when his face was put up on the FBI’s top ten most wanted list: "We will find you no matter where you are."
Prosecutors say Stephenson killed his girlfriend, Olga DeJesus, and killed their dog in October of 2014.
The Newark resident had been on the run for years. But, DeJesus’ brother said the family never gave up hope.
"We went through a lot. I mean I didn't give up. For four years, I emailed the prosecutor’s office. I communicated with everyone there. The FBI, the Newark P.D., everybody, and this was a result and we're grateful for it,” Felix DeJesus said.
Stephenson was found sleeping in truck by local police in Prince George’s County in Maryland.
Officers soon discovered who they had on their hands, and note that Stephenson’s violent behavior continued during the four years he was on the run.
On Wednesday night, a 40-year-old woman in D.C. was stabbed to death along with her cat. Metropolitan Police say Stephenson was also responsible for the crime.
