Staff members cheered as a 36-year-old mother who suffered severe complications from COVID-19 held her newborn son for the first time as she was discharged from a Long Island hospital on Wednesday.

Yanira Soriano was admitted to Southside Hospital with pneumonia from COVID-19 earlier this month and had to remain in a medically induced coma on a ventilator for 11 days.

"The baby's only oxygen supply comes from the mom and because the mother's oxygen levels were low there was real concern that the baby could be injured or even die from a lack of oxygen," Schwartz said.
