HEMPSTEAD (WCBS 880) – Coronavirus cases jumped 25 percent from Friday to Saturday in Nassau County, officials said.

Nassau Executive Laura Curran wasn’t surprised.

“As more tests come online and they’re done, we will see these numbers increase,” she told WCBS 880 Saturday.

There are currently 1,234 cases in the county—300 more than Friday. Some 39 people are hospitalized, and three new deaths were reported in the county.

“More people will resolve. Most people will be fine,” Curran said.

So far the 11 hospitals in the county are handling the cases, but Curran warned people not to make health care workers’ jobs harder.

“You don’t have to call 911. If you’re mildly symptomatic, don’t call 911. People are panicking, calling 911, getting to the ambulance, getting to the emergency room. If you’re mildly symptomatic, stay home and treat this like you would the flu,” she said.

Curran said the system is working hard enough as it is.
