ALBANY (WCBS 880) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo appears to be opening the door for mobile sports betting, but time is running out in Albany with just 15 days left in the legislative session.

The governor has said there could be legal roadblocks to legalizing mobile sports betting in New York, but said Tuesday that he believes it’s possible legislation could be passed before the session closes.

“That’s a light at the other end of the tunnel and there doesn’t seem to be an oncoming train anymore,” said Assemblyman Gary Pretlow.

Pretlow was relieved to hear that the governor is now backing plans to allow mobile sports betting in the state.

“There was some constitutional questions, which I’m pretty sure weren’t legitimate,” he said.

The assemblyman says right now New York is just handing money over to New Jersey where it is legal. He notes that he hear stories from folks on Wall Street all the time.

“They go under the tunnel, as soon as they pass the Jersey boarder, they push send, they get off the train, walk back across the platform and go back to Wall Street,” Pretlow explains.

Both sponsors in the Assembly and Senate say there are enough supporters for mobile sports betting to pass.

Pretlow hopes to have it up and running in time for football season.
