RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — The coronavirus pandemic in New York City is having a positive effect on the real estate market on Long Island.

Real estate agent Lisa Kennedy, of Eric G. Ramsey and Associates, says people are particularly looking for lots of space and room for children to play. She notes that the pandemic prevented many New York City children from getting outside and it’s a priority for those moving east.

Kennedy says they’re also tired of living in apartments, where it’s difficult to socially distance from neighbors.

“They want a backyard, they want a pool. A pool is a major want right now,” she explains.

She says she's put eight houses in the contract just using virtual showings.

Now that Long Island is in Phase 2, however, she says it’s difficult to even get an appointment to see homes – especially in Suffolk County – as homes are selling so rapidly.

“There no resistance in the market meaning, the buyers are not thinking to themselves, ‘I'm nervous about the economy,’” Kennedy explains. “They are out and they are bidding full price and they are bidding over full price to get what they want.”

She adds that many buyers are telling her they will not be commuting into the city and are continuing to work from home.
