NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The City University of New York is trying to juggle virtual graduation ceremonies as it plans for students to return in the fall.

“Words cannot express the pride I feel for the Class of 2020, who have endured and overcome so much uncertainty, stress and hardship during these unprecedented times. Their resilience and passion to accomplish what they set out to achieve, despite so many obstacles is an inspiration to all of us. They have truly made us all CUNY Proud,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez.

He added: “As I have said many times before, graduation is always my favorite time of year. And while a traditional celebration is not possible at this time, as a University and a community we have — even in the midst of this horrible pandemic and tragic loss — so much to be thankful for, and so much to celebrate.”

The largest urban public university is planning on hosting the celebration online this year amid the pandemic.

Though, Rodriguez says virtual graduation ceremonies could proceed in person ceremonies at some point.

“Some people are saying maybe inviting the class of 2020 to sort of be a part of the procession along with the class of 2021,” he explains.

He notes that remote learning has presented new challenges, as well.

"Wi-Fi issues at home.  Managing lack of computers.  Managing being quarantined.  Family always sick.  Students that face unemployment and difficulty,” Rodriguez said.

Summer classes will be all remote learning and Rodriguez says definitely more online classes in the fall than usual.

"That gives us the maximum level of flexibility to be able to adapt to whatever the public health conditions might be when we start in the fall,” he explains.
