GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A Florida man was arrested on Saturday after allegedly driving a utility truck through an intersection on Friday, hitting more than five vehicles and killing a cyclist.
The crash happened in Garden City around 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Nassau County Police Department said Matthew Mummaw, 33, of Jacksonville, Florida, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an incident, two charges of driving while ability impaired, reckless driving and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.
Authorities say Mummaw was driving a bucket truck when it swerved into five vehicles stopped at a red light on Merchants Concourse at the intersection of Corporate Drive.
The 33-year-old continued driving and then hit a man on a bicycle at the Meadowbrook Parkway overpass, cops said.
After leaving that accident, he turned onto Stewart Avenue, where he was involved in a head-on collision with two more vehicles and came to a stop.
The 39-year-old cyclist, later identified as Hempstead resident Erik Canales, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Nassau County Police say he will be arraigned at a later date when medically practical.
