NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Former mayor and current presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg showed up at the Bowery Mission to volunteer and hand out turkeys.
"I’m grateful for the chance to be here with them today to help give back to a city that I love.", he wrote on Twitter.
The Bowery Mission opened its doors for others without a place to eat on Thanksgiving, serving hundreds of people in lower Manhattan.
The mission donates 600 turkeys, 400 pies, 1,800 pounds of vegetables and approximately 6,000 pounds of potatoes.
A lot of the work is done by volunteers and the demand to volunteer on Thanksgiving is so high that the mission has to turn people away.About 7,000 meals will be served today.
