NORTHPORT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A new study released Friday revealed a Long Island middle school is safe, even though parents have been claiming something in the school has been making students and faculty sick for decades.

WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reports parents have been complaining for years about their children becoming sick and the high rate of childhood cancer at Northport Middle school.

Some parents blame a mysterious toxic odor for sickening their children and a few faculty members and in January, the superintendent confirmed there were elevated levels of mercury found in the cesspool area outside of the building.

According to a 7,000-page report from an environmental company, however, the school is safe to occupy.

A virtual forum on the issue is set for June 25.

Though, some parents, like Tammie Topel – who had two children go to the school while growing up – say they aren’t believing the reports.

“All septic systems, all 32 septic systems needed remediation. So there was something wrong,” she said. “It's not like people were getting sick for no reason.”

A remediation of those 32 areas has taken place, according to Hall.

The superintendent declined to comment until after the forum.
