NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- New Jersey Transit trains were running on schedule during the Tuesday morning commute after a chaotic rush home last night.

Thousands were delayed for hours because of a power failure that disabled a train in a tunnel as it was going into Penn Station.

The same happened to a rescue train that followed it.

"It was crazy, I mean, I couldn't even move," one commuter explained.

"It was super crowded, super busy," another commuter said. "It was hectic, people were angry."

Service delays began just before the start of rush hour Monday, with New Jersey Transit initially informing riders that the problems would delay outbound trains by up to a half-hour.

Instead, the major delays continued well into the night.

Amtrak says power was lost on the tracks just outside the station around 4:30 p.m. and was restored by 8 p.m.

The reason for the outage is unknown.

New Jersey Transit continued to cross-honor NJT tickets on the PATH at Newark Penn, Hoboken, and 33rd Street until early Tuesday.

A state audit of NJ Transit released last week, found that there were 18,000 train delays between 2017 and spring of 2019 that were all preventable.
