POINT PLEASANT, N.J. (WCBS 880) — One New Jersey beach is looking to limit the size of coolers allowed to crackdown on illegal drinking.

Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Paul Kanitra says the move is “taking back the beach from disrespectful tourists.”

“If you're used to coming to Point Pleasant Beach and acting ridiculous and thinking you can get away with it, that time is ending right now,” the mayor said.

On Tuesday night, Point Pleasant Beach Borough councilmembers introduced an ordinances that will limit the size of coolers brought on to the beach.

Containers must be no larger than 13 inches in length, width and height and should only be able to carry nine quarts.

The town council also established a legal minimum age for those who check coolers so children "aren't expected to search for substances they legally can't touch.”

The borough is also increasing its beach patrol to crack down on loud music.

“It doesn't matter what you play. We don't care if you play country music, rock music, or polka, we just don't want it to be so loud that the neighbors on the boardwalk, the neighbors on the beaches are subjected to it,” Kanitra said.

He added that the council banned "loud, obnoxious music from being played by those who feel the need to selfishly bother everyone around them."

The new ordinances take effect on August 4.
