NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- An offshore noreaster has brought high winds and major flooding to parts of Long Island.

Lindenhurst law enforcement had to bring out their high water vehicles to patrol on Thursday night after the tide in the south shore community rose up and covered the roads, making some of the side streets impassable.

The flooding started with Thursday morning's high tide, but the water never receded, and instead, the flooding only got worse as the storm hit.

According to resident Dwayne Henky, "It probably got to four inches deep all the way across the road. Kind of common out here when we get this type of weather pattern. When you live this close to the shore this is part of it, there's a price to pay."

Minor flooding was left over on Friday from the high tide.

In Bay Shore the flooding was so severe, firefighters had to rescue 50 customers and staff at the Lakehouse restaurant."I've never seen it come up the street, so i'm assuming that's the full moon effect of it," said Gia Chia, a resident who was shocked at how high the water got.

The state's homeland security and emergency services website, provides safety tips for flooding and severe weather such as following recommended routes, learning the safest route from your home or business to high, safe ground should you have to leave in a hurry to keeping disaster supplies on hand.

A coastal flood warning is up until midnight for southern Nassau and southwestern Suffolk counties.

A coastal flood advisory extends to Connecticut, Westchester and the five boroughs as well as Hudson, Eastern Union and Essex counties.
