NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A charity in Brooklyn is learning how to step it’s game up during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sisters with a Purpose, based in East New York, has been serving the Brooklyn community for a decade. For years, the group has been working to get food to those who need it.
However, as the need increased during the pandemic, so did their work flow – and somehow, they’ve managed to keep up.
“This is a beautiful organization,” said one resident.
Even on the hottest days, people can line up to get what they need.
“Kale, tomatoes, we have lettuce from the garden. We also have cabbage, apples, fresh pasta, bread, butter, milk, you name it we have it,” says Susie Williams, who founded the organization.
Williams says she wanted to give back to the community and in the past few months, says the demand has exploded.
“We used to serve 200 meals a month. Now, upwards of 2000 a month,” she said.
A tenfold increase during the coronavirus era. But Sisters with Purpose has more than one purpose.
The group also gives students lessons in African dance and Ballroom dancing.
“Ballroom is something they can use in later life. It’s excellent to put on their resume, if they go to events, as they get older, if they are going to be in pageants,” Williams explains.
Sisters with Purpose and Williams try to help where they can and they are appreciated in the East New York Community.
“I love Sisters with Purpose. And especially Sister Susie who organizes the whole thing,” said one resident.
“They are angels from above. And they should be definitely be recognized,” another person said.
They aim to empower women and their families by providing resources to help them develop necessary skills to engage in their communities.
