NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A disturbing find in a New Jersey school is raising new questions about the need to address hateful ideology in the young.
With Rosh Hashanah and the High Holy Days approaching on the Jewish calendar, it’s normally a time for joy and renewal, but a pall has been cast by the appearance of swastikas in the 6th grade boy’s bathroom in Glen Rock Middle school.
The hate symbols were discovered Thursday.
Police are trying to narrow down which students might have been in the vicinity, using video from hallway cameras and hall pass records.
The Record reports that last spring there were two other swastika incidents in the district, in the high school and in a building shared by the high school and the middle school.
The schools superintendent says there is no evidence to support a link between those incidents and the most recent discovery.
In response to the rise of bias incidents in New Jersey, state officials responded with a task force, which looks at ways to deal with bias in young people.
The task force is expected to promulgate recommendations over the next several months.
