FAIRFEILD, Conn. (WCBS 880) — A Connecticut teen who recently graduated from Fairfield College Preparatory School, is running for mayor.
While most 18-year-olds are settling into their first year of college, Colin Bella, of Norwalk, announced his candidacy for mayor in a YouTube video on Oct. 4.
“Throughout my years in this great city, I’ve seen a lot of changes. Jobs coming and going. Residents staying and leaving,” Bella said. “I’m here to be the change that this city is yearning for, I’m here to be the hero that this city doesn’t know it needs.”
The Secretary of State recognized Bella as an official write-in candidate for this year’s election. He is believed to be the first official write-in candidate in recent memory.
The 18-year-old has registered as a Republican and is running against Mayor Harry Rilling, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Lisa Brinton.
Only two 18-year-olds have ever been elected mayor in the United States.
