Wegmans Celebrates Grand Opening Of First NYC Location At Brooklyn Navy Yard

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Wegmans has opened its first store in New York City and that has the supermarket's devoted followers very excited.

The highly-anticipated opening was celebrated on the second floor of its new location at 25 Navy Street in Brooklyn on Sunday.

"Wegmans is not just an ordinary supermarket," said Sen. Charles Scuhmer, who is among the so-called "Wegmaniacs" on hand for the grand opening. "Never in our dreams, did we think we'd get such a great supermarket like Wegmans."

"I always say that Wegmans is like if Whole Foods and Trader Joe's had a baby and it's an amazing store," said Brianna, who came all the way from Harlem to shop at her favorite grocery store. "I've been telling everybody about it. I'm so excited and I dragged my family with me."

The new 75,000-square-foot store is the smallest of grocery chain's 101 stores, which are located across New York state, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.

It's part of the massive re-development plan at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, coming with a promise of more than 500 jobs.

It's expected to attract about 50,000 customers per week.Wegmans, which was founded over a century ago in Rochester and is still family-owned, plans to add another store in Westchester County.
