NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The NYPD has added children as young as 11 to its facial recognition database.

The New York Times reports the department has been loading thousands of arrest photos of children and teenagers into the database even though there’s evidence of a higher risk of false matches in younger faces, because they’re still changing.

There’s also a lower accuracy rate with kids with darker skin.

The NYPD is defending the practice, saying the use of arrest photos helps it identify suspects.
