SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — Police in the Hamptons are warning owners of Range Rovers, Mercedes and other high end vehicles about a recent string of car thefts in the area.

According to Southampton Town Police, residents from Bridgehampton to Westhampton have had their vehicles stolen in the middle of the night.

It’s not clear exactly how many vehicles have been stolen in total.

As WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall reports, the residential areas are normally so quiet and safe that many people tend to leave their car doors unlocked – some even leave the keys inside the car.

Cops now are telling residents to take precautions, even when their cars are parked outside their homes.

Tips include locking doors and setting alarms, parking cars near motion detectors and/or surveillance cameras, removing all keys and valuables from the vehicle and parking vehicles in locked garages.

Anyone who has any information or has video surveillance recordings is asked to contact Southampton Town Police at 631-728-5000.
