NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Russell Alexeev is a 19-year-old undergrad at Fordham. He also owns his own fashion brand, Diskko, which has nearly 13,000 Instagram followers.
Alexeev first got into business making skateboard hardware when he was a freshman in high school, but quickly realized he wasn't ready to get involved in that particular market so he took his passion into clothing.
He started making T-shirts for skateboards before launching Diskko, which takes inspiration from history and reintroduces those concepts through modern fashion.
"We do anything from taking historical concepts as far back as it goes, that's the beauty of being able to work with history is that there's so much art involved and it's so rich in art and so rich in different historical concepts, and themes and ideas that it's just very easy to use these themes and ideas to create inspiration for new modern fashion," Alexeev tells Joe Connolly in this week's Small Business Spotlight, sponsored by BNB Bank — "Community Banking From Montauk To Manhattan."
While Diskko has retained some of its skater consumers, it has managed to grow its following through social media influencers and campaigns.
Last winter, Alexeev hosted an event in Williamsburg on the sidelines of New York Fashion Week, where New York-based rapper ASAP TyY performed.
"He really liked the brand, he liked the company and what we stand by," Alexeev said. "I couldn't get into any of the big shows... they required a lot from us, so I decided I'm just going to go to Williamsburg and I'm going to do my own fashion show. It went really well, I sold out the venue."
