RIDGEFIELD, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- The man pulled from the rubble after a house explosion in New Jersey has died.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office has identified the victim as 48-year-old Mark Schellack.

A large fire erupted after the home at 360 Abbott Avenue exploded  just after 11 a.m. in Ridgefield.

Neighbors quickly swarmed the area, and an off-duty police officer, who lives just a block away from the home, dug through the debris to help save Schellack, who was trapped unde the rubble in the back of the basement.

Schellack, who was badly burned, was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center and was later airlifted to Saint Barnabas Medical Center for further treatment.

He succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the explosion, but it appears the source was natural gas.

PSE&G conducted a pressure test and concluded there were no leaks in the gas line spanning from the street to the home.
