Water Main Erupts In Manhattan During Evening Rush

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A water main break in Chelsea has closed a stretch of Seventh Avenue and reportedly delayed some subway lines just as commuters are heading home for the day.

The water main erupted on Seventh Avenue, in the area of West 23rd Street, sometime before 4 p.m., according to the NYPD and transit officials.

Police have closed traffic on a swath of Seventh Avenue. West 26th Street is also closed to traffic.

The NYPD is warning drivers to avoid streets between West 25th and West 34th as crews work to repair the broken main.

There are multiple reports of delays on the 1, 2 and 3 subway lines.
